So I set one up to handle my holiday meals.
My first tab is a list of all the dishes I might possibly prepare. I've got it set up in a way that categorizes by Dish Name, Type of Dish (think entree, side, dessert, drink, or snack), Whether or not it's being served for the holiday. If it's a recipe that is available online, I've got a recipe location column. Lastly, I have a column that I input the number of servings I intend to make.
Basically the two most important inputs for this sheet are do I plan on serving it and how much do I plan on making.
My next tab is my ingredient list. It's got the dish name, whether it's being served, the ingredients necessary, how much, the unit of measure for the ingredient. From the first page I bring in the total number of servings and converts all the ingredient measurements to a standard unit of measure (either oz or eaches).
My third tab lists all the ingredients, how they are purchased, and does a conversion to that standard unit of measure of oz or eaches.
My fourth tab is a conversion of a distinct list of the units of measure that the recipes call for to oz (so think 128oz instead of 1 Gallon, or .5oz instead of a tablespoon).
My final tab is my shopping list. Based on my input on my Menu tab (First Tab), I get an output of how much of each ingredient I need to buy. I then go through my fridge and pantry to figure out how much I already have and subtract that from what I need to buy, and then round up to the nearest whole purchase quantity based on the data in my third tab.
Since I normally purchase my groceries online and pick them up, I include an additional column on my shopping list to note whether the item was available for purchase or not. If not, I know what I'm missing and I need to go look for
Anyway, I hope that helps stoke some creative juices for you!
My goodness… that’s some prep work. I use jhrecipes.com to store my recipes. Then, before going to buy groceries I write down which recipes I feel like making and what ingredients I need that I don’t have. Most of the times it’s just a few main ingredients that I have to write down (meat, fish, etc.) because I always buy some “base ingredients” (tomatoes, potatoes, onions, peppers, garlic) I use often and for which I don’t need a list.
What’s your goal with this? Just asking because I feel like there are plenty of apps out there that may already solve what you’re trying to do
