I’m DONE with the 100-hour weeks, looking for a way out. Been in investment banking for 5 years and I’m burning out fast. The pay is great, but my health and relationships are taking a huge toll. I’m seriously considering leaving IB for something less grueling. Anyone here made the leap out of banking? Where'd you end up?

You work 100 hours a week…?

Ya you're doing that wrong. Are you sure that investment banking is the issue, and not your unwillingness to set boundaries? You deserve a life outside of work. Also, you'll be able to discover what "sleep" is and I think you're really going to like it.

like

It’s expected if they’re expected to build their own book over time. You’re out hunting all day, going to events, sitting on boards - anything at all to get clients and it’s not easy.

The AUM expected only gets higher every year. You know getting in, you’re going to GRIND - they’re very up front about it, but it’s also why we’re paid so much when we do.

Very demanding field.

I’m sure OP is exaggerating. That 100 hours is full of breaks and dilly dallying 100%

like

100?!?! Even the busiest people I know aren't managing to pull 100 hours I don't think.. I'd say even though this industry is demanding, that sounds really excessive. I would look elsewhere for a more manageable workload

Just leave, realise you can do more and better, stop IB’ing or die attitude! So many career options out there that don’t include slaving away as a monkey..

Hello my friend, any advice or leads on those other opportunities. Im also doing my research.

I used to work 120 hour so please don’t complain! Ha jk. Get out asap. Not sustainable life

like

No, 17/18 hours per day including weekends.

How many of those hours are junk hours though…

Find a job where you can take some risk and get paid for it if you win

I don’t think I work that in a month… ho-ly

Whoaaa that is wayyyy too many hours for any one person to be working in a a week. I know lots of people in IB that are not working nearly that many hours so maybe its just the company you are at. Either way that is not good for your mental health.

I can't imagine how horrible this must be. I would think about investment banking adjacent roles like general asset management firms. Use Chat GPT to get ideas but also the Bureau of Labor Statistics if you're in the USA. The Occupational Handbook they publish can give you investment and finance adjacent job title ideas. O*NET has a good search for jobs and skills required. All my best wishes. It's not an easy market.

Try real estate private equity it’s only 60 hours

Hey I exited to PE and the money is better but the hours are still high. I average 60-80 but no more 100 hour weeks.

You need to find the right investment firm . Google Brown Brothers Harriman

Is it the case here?

I have been approached with an opportunity at JP Morgan Chase for their private client advisor role. The book is about 30M all in. I am currently an experienced hybrid asset manager wholesaler and have experience in advising as well. Curious about the opportunity with JPM and if it’s worth it. I currently make about 160k and if JPM would give me a high draw for the first 3 years to build, and if it’s feasible to sustain that 160+ there.

As the CSC exam costs above 1000 CAD, I wanted to be sure if I need it before investing behind it.
