It's all about presence. To command it, you don't have to be the biggest person there. Don't let it dishearten you. Instead, work on gaining some muscular mass in the meantime. All that matters is that you are a well-rounded officer.
I worked in a state prison for a long time. Size doesn’t matter. You may have to modify some things due to it. But I believe you will be more than capable of doing the job. Once you get out of the academy you will be able to talk to other female officers and get their advice. Good luck and don’t give up on it.
I am 5'2" and weigh 113 pounds. Don't let them tell you that you are too small! My husband calls me "sassy" and "feisty" all the time. I say good things come in small packages!!
Over the years, I have worked with some remarkable men & women, plus some that should never have been allowed to wear a uniform. You get to decide which way it goes. Use your size & interpersonal skills to your advantage. My last unsolicited thought is to stay away from workplace romances & have friends outside of law enforcement. Good luck in your career.
I am a female cop that stands at 5'4". I occasionally feel small, especially in comparison to the men I work with. Because the people you interact with are physically larger than you, there will be instances when you are tested and stepped up to. But this is when your verbal command abilities really shine.
As long as you can carry yourself in a way that people can respect, size is irrelevant. Although I can't guarantee it, this is a vital component of interacting with the community.

I don't have to fight suspects nearly as frequently as the males do. Learn how to communicate with them. If force is necessary, you apply your tools. Do not rely on your ability to manage without a toolbelt. That's the one thing I was told.
I work with a few female coworkers who are all pretty small-framed. You will be respected as long as you can handle your stuff. My team is excellent, and we always answer each other's calls when something sounds like it might go out of hand.
If this is your calling, do not opt out. That said, you may have to find other avenues to defend yourself in a physical altercation. Learn to talk to people, and you’ll get into fewer physical altercations. That’s the top priority. Otherwise be confident, look sharp, know your stuff and set clear boundaries with people. You'll rarely have a problem.
Make them understand, OP. I know they are only thinking about your safety but you are brave enough for choosing this job. You have my respect :)
If you are mentally and physically fit, then you are cut for the job. Assure them that you will be okay. I am sure they will support you.
Don't let that bother you. I have been working in Corrections for 10 years. Not myself, but several female colleagues are small in size. As long as they are, or act self-confident, while stay very present/alert, assertive and show no fear, are consistent and emotionally distant, (professional) they have respect. Having said that, make sure you are in good shape, and know at least one martial art. It helps to back up true self confidence.
