I had this problem when I coached. I looked at it as, “As long as the are working out”. I found and have seen that too many times a coach gets to demanding about what their players should be doing and the player or players end up quitting.
Remember most of those outside sources tell the kids lies by telling them what the kid wants to hear just so they get the kid on their side. The players don’t realize until afterwards that the coach was right. Not to mention that so many pro athletes go off on their own too so kids follow their lead.
Bottom line is, you need to look at it as, “How important is it that they do your thing”, and go from there. Maybe even talk with your local trainers to see if you can possibly work together.
Good point. I have decided to not let it bother me as much as it was. I'm trying to focus on other things that contribute to the team feel. With cross-country it's already so easy for them to feel like it is an individual sport my main concern is about it leading to resentment and division within the team.
I completely agree with the 1st comment. I coached multiple sports for 18 years and the one thing I noticed, when I came to participation, the more you push them to join you then then more you push them away.
