Did you come in at as a “seventh year” or at a lower class year? Also, is the “fourth year” someone that has been with the firm since they were a summer associate or straight out of law school? It seems like sometimes associates who have been with the firm since lockstep (if your firm does that) have a higher floor for base comp. They could also be going over hours or have great production and it’s not necessarily that you being a hair under is a detriment and more that they are just exceeding where a typical 4th year would be. I’d be really annoyed but if reviews are fine I wouldn’t necessarily think it’s meant to be a message to push you out or anything.
It’d help to know what your comp and hours are. I’m a 7th year in house and live in a HCOL area (NJ) but make $232k base with a 25% bonus plus equity. Most weeks I work 35-40 hours. Sometimes less. Sometimes a little more. But it’s weird a 4th year at your firm makes more than you.
My comp is $110,000 and 1,800 hours. The pay rate comes on the back of switching practices when I made the move over to the current firm.
Still feels very odd that someone so junior makes more. Feels like I'm getting fleeced and want to make sure I'm not off base.
Rising Star
That’s robbery. That’s insanely low. You are getting fleeced.
Those are good points. Thanks for the insight. I did transfer over to a new practice area (transactional) that I didn't have experience in. Which would explain the year drop. But I've slowly been worked into the litigation areas that I've experience in and is making the gap very annoying at this point. Probably the main touchstone in my review this year.
