I started planning early, but I think people can over-complicate it. The best strategy is simple: live below your means, automate your savings, and avoid lifestyle inflation
This! Simple and absolutely correct!
Starting early is key! In my 20s, I focused on maxing out my 401(k) contributions, especially to take advantage of employer matching. I also opened a Roth IRA to diversify my retirement savings. The power of compound interest really comes into play when you automate your savings—set it and forget it.
Contribute at least enough to get your company match. I also set up a separate Roth IRA as it allows for a little more flexibility and investment options aren’t limited as they are within a 401k. Treating “saving” as a “fixed expense” has been helpful for me!
Put money in your 401k! Don’t have to max out but early contributions and employer matching is huge. If it doesn’t hurt your lifestyle to put extra $500 per paycheck, do it. Contribute a portion of your bonus too, I turned off the 401k contribution for my bonus check.
Enjoy life while young, travel, don’t be cheap. You don’t get your health, energy and freedom back as you get older. Kids, house, career gets busier. If you are smart and work hard, you will make more money than you thought possible. Enjoy it as you go, and if you can bump up your retirement contribution when young it helps a lot!
It is great that you are thinking about this in your 20's because i am in my 30's and never took it seriously until now. Make sure to do your research and even try talking to a financial advisor to determine what the best options are for you. Its never too early to get on top of this stuff.
