It's a hard question. I've driven that route many times. Cleveland area is, well cleveland. Then you either go south to Pittsburgh (if you do, Pittsburgh is worth a visit) or stay north, which may be a little faster but omg there's nothing -- Erie, Buffalo or really down and out tiny towns on the back roads. Sounds like you're not adventurous, so I'd suggest Pittsburgh.
I've done this drive before -- stayed in downtown Cleveland one night. It helps to be fresh when you go through PA -- 6 hours on farm roads is very taxing.
13.5 hours if done without breaks. I don't know that I would feel comfortable driving over 800 miles in one day. There's a reason truck drivers are usually restricted to about 600 miles per day
Grab a hotel or motel in Youngstown and take I-80. If crossing the Hudson, take a break first in N NJ so you're fresh for NYC's traffic.
@C1 - why would you take 6 hours of farm roads in PA instead of 80?
I just did the reverse in a day, totally doable if you plan breaks / naps on your route
What is that, like a 12 Hour drive? Why would you need to stop beyond food and gas breaks?
If woman driving alone I would split up
Also I am driving alone so no opportunity to switch off driving with someone
If I had to stop it would be as close as I could get to NYC as possible...better to have one awful day than 2 bad days driving
I've done this drive. I stopped in Youngstown, Ohio, but I wish I'd stopped sooner. I also drove in January and it was snowing/freezing raining. I wouldn't suggest doing this in 1 day bc the drive is super boring and thus, even more taxing
Also time your arrival in NYC carefully - anytime before 10 or after 3, you'll be dealing with God awful traffic. What area are you moving to?
I think I'm going to stop overnight in college park that way I do 570 miles on day one and 245 miles on day two. Seems like a good way to split it
@C1 Yes!! What I was trying to say but much better said
@P1, being on 80 through PA IS being on farm roads. There is literally nothing for miles around as you drive.
I've done this drive while moving. Day 1 was Chicago to western PA, about 45 min to 1 hr east of Pittsburgh. Just stayed at a random Hampton inn off I-80 and it was fine. Day 2 right into the NYC area, had a leisurely morning and made it in well before evening rush hour.
@C1 OK, I've just never heard of an interstate called a farm road before. And I was just on I-20 in west Texas a few weeks ago literally in farm and ranch country; there it's "the big highway".
@OP If you stay in State College, home of Penn State, you'll likely find it to be s very cool college town and a nice place to overnight.
