I’m not a new lawyer but it’s my first year in PI. I have one paralegal who has done a great job this year. I also have a second paralegal who is part time and helps me as well as other attorneys. Second paralegal is also new and hasn’t done that much for me so far. Do I get them both gifts?

They would very much appreciate it, even if it isn't large. Cash is king, but gift cards or even a team dinner at a restaurant that they normally wouldn't go to. Anything lets them know you appreciate them.

I love when I get my end of year bonus from the attorney I work for. And I agree with you, even just a small gift card is a really great gesture. I remember my first year as a paralegal one of the attorneys I helped from time to time gave me a $100 gift card to Starbucks and it was really nice to just feel appreciated and seen.

It’s always nice to feel appreciated especially around the holidays! Doesn’t have to be anything big. One of the attorneys I used to work with got me a gift card and I thought that was really nice considering she wasn’t a partner she was only an associate.

I am with you on this. I usually get a bigger bonus from the attorney I work for but the other attorneys I help out from time to time usually get me a Starbucks gift card and I always really appreciate it. Its really nice to know people notice and appreciate your work.

Hmm I think I would recommend getting second paralegal something small. It would be a really nice gesture and speaking from a paralegals perspective it sucks when you are the only person who doesn't get a gift on the holidays.

I'm looking for advice from those who have freelanced remotely with an international agency.

I'm based in NYC and have had firms in Canada and England reach out about projects. The agencies have offices in the US but I would be working w/ their international teams (servicing US based clients). I've asked for my standard rate in USD converted to their currency.

Any advice on the best way to get paid? Have you asked to get paid by the US office instead? Any watch-outs for tax season?

TIA!

I also take the driver seat for the grunt work on the firms bigger cases which are at or near 7 figure value. I constantly feel (cont.)

What’s a good LA or NY business litigation firm and salary to expect? I’m a 2yr with quite frankly a lot of experience across civ rights, PI, excessive force, wrongful death, employment defense, K dispute, corp. structure dispute, professional licensure. Write every kind of brief, appeals, argue motions, take depos. Am the only associate working directly under partner on all cases. In house or M&A/Real Estate Transactional are likely the end goal but want to get the litigation out of me first.
