Totally understand how this can be hard. That said, based on working with thousands of execs, many of them in the C-suite the differentiator between decent ones and great ones is their approach to being responsive vs. reactive. Typically, when we are showing up as a Johnny on the spot or in firefighter mode (even if it’s work we love or actions we’ve been rewarded for in the past) we are reacting. When we react we at times can limit the possibility of our true brilliance showing up. Also, when we react, we’ve often adopted someone else’s agenda or emotion as a priority and have deprioritized something critical and important to us (including our rest, recovery and most important relationships)…often in an effort to feel/be safe in some way.
When we are responsive, we can show up for people in a way that doesn’t create lasting friction or strain (on ourselves, others or even on situations).
A thought (if you’re open to it), the next time the situation presents itself and you have the choice to work on the weekend or respond to emails when you’re supposed to be off, just take a second to ask “am I being reactive or responsive?” No right or wrong answer, this is just about calling in awareness so you’re making a more informed choice.
I delete the outlook app from my phone over the weekend and before I go on vacation. Sometimes, I’ll even do it on a weekday if I find myself checking email too much or stressing out about work.
Set up a DND schedule for work notifications. This can be done on Slack and email, and helps set up the expectation that you reply during working hours only.
It will be up to you to actually stick to the boundary.
I am incredibly guilty of this. I try my best to disconnect and can usually swear of work on Friday evenings. By Saturday I’m starting to slip and check emails. Then I invariably end up working on Sunday nights in an attempt to get ahead of the upcoming week’s work.
