“Never take a job just for the money” is the most privileged advice ive ever heard.
If you're that underpaid then any potential new job should give you a massive jump. Money helps, but I wonder if it would be be worth it to hold out for something you'd be happy with?
Ideally you’ll always be getting two things out of these three: good money, good work, good quality of life. Never bolt for only one
If that's bizarre to you, you've clearly never had to worry about money.
The other thing I've found is some of the worst places to work throw money at people to woo them in. I am not saying you aren't worth that money, but there is a bit of a scheme of throw a bunch at them because they know their own reputation. But when they put that much investment up front, they actually have less to give raises and invest in talent in other ways. Guarantee you'll want to leave as soon as you arrive.
I'm just gonna put it out there that it IS ok to take a job for money. A lot of people in our industry have the luxury of turning down a high paying offer for a better work environment or creative op, I didn't. It was a grind but I don't regret it, helped me pay off my debts so much faster and then I had a higher salary to use as negotiation for the next shop I went to. Money is important and only you know your financial situation and what the best decision is for you.
Jump and then boomerang back.
Do it. Do it for the money. Unless you're in this broken business for personal fulfillment.
Compensation is important, but never take a job only based on money. Remember, your book will get you the next job, so be sure that the opportunity aligns with your goals.
When you say miserable - is it a people issue or boring work?
Who cares - never go to a place you know you will be miserable.
Definitely considering using it as leverage, but my current agency is possibly not in a position to counter - in which case I'd have to take the offer or eat my words.
Would knowing you’re making 65% less than you could be make you unhappy?
I did that very recently. It’s worth every penny. I prob won’t stick around very long at the new place but I feel completely fine about my decision. I’m over the days of being severely underpaid.
Can’t you use it as leverage to meet somewhere in the middle?
That’s tough then. As long as they know you don’t *want* to leave they might be able to give you something small, like a bonus instead of a raise that could at least sweeten the pot a bit but I don’t envy that position.
Yeah wtf is that attitude? That’s a huge pay difference. If you’re reasonably sure no other agency is looking at you, take it. That’s a massive amount you’d be throwing away by waiting another whole year, unless you think your book will really be that much better in a year.
Bizarre you’d even accept an offer at a place you’d be miserable. Feel bad for whoever’s dumb enough to hire you.
Yeah cause my first job was a CD.
But back on track, what constitutes miserable for you? Is it the hours? Is it the creative opp? Or is it some other intangible? It seems like you’re fairly unhappy with you current job, so how would the new one be different, other than the fact that your making more. Also, it’s a fresh start, you’re always perceived as more senior and more in command of your title at a new job.
Don’t take a job if you’re negative about it before you even start. It’s just not the way to step into something new.
Do it!!!
