You leverage your current pay and start looking for something new now
Start looking. If nothing else, think of it this way - if your mental health is suffering because of your environment, your work will start to suffer, too.
(I say this as someone sitting in a strikingly similar boat)
Coming from a very recent (identical) personal experience, I say start looking immediately. A toxic environment will not only make you completely miserable, but threatens your job security. Places like that like to hire and fire people like it’s nothing. Don’t make the same mistake I made, and try to stick it out if it looks like it’s engrained in their culture. I realized how toxic the place was by my second week. I tried to stick it out because it was too late to try to go back to my old gig, and because the pay was great. But I was on borrowed time, and they dropped the hammer on me at the worst time.
P.S. Is this agency in CHI?
You just learned the lesson that no amount of money is worth it. Get out.
That’s the game plan, but at what point is it appropriate to re-think and re-evaluate for the good or for the worse?
What if you just started and think it may not be best fit for your needs mentally. The workload isn’t the problem but the structure and unclear paths for directions ? How long is acceptable to stay, leave?
Be the change you want to see? Good paying jobs are always good. Can you make it more positive? I’m guilty of perpetuating negative environments in the past, but learned to make them better by being an example and fostering better relationships
I stayed 7 months. About 4 months too long.
