I’m sleep deprived and kind of grumpy at work today. Not a great combo in the restaurant industry. So I snapped at a customer (to be fair the lady was being a Karen and complaining about stupid things). She stormed out furious… I don’t normally lose my cool but with fatigue, I just could not hold my tongue - but I felt super guilty afterwards. Ever lose your cool when you’re tired? How did you recover from the incident?

Sometimes customers need to be put in their place. Although this attitude is probably why I’m kept in the back of the house lol. I don’t have a ton of patience for rude or entitled people.

like

lol yeah I’m right with you! I would call out more rude customers but I behave most of the time.

I've learned to discipline myself but there have been times recently when I really wanted to just unload verbally on someone. Usually when somebody is trying to push my buttons I'll mess up their efforts by being surprisingly polite in the face of their idiocy. That tends to confuse them, it's like they want to provoke someone and they don't know what to do when it doesn't work.

like

I wish I were as disciplined as you… normally I don’t lose my cool, but when I’m too tired…

If she comes back, you can always apologize. Or just learn from it for next time. It happens, we're all human.

I doubt she will come back. She was seriously rude - normally I’d just ignore it but I just couldn’t help myself yesterday. Thankfully I’m more rested today so will be able to tolerate rude customers!

Been there. I got into it with our bartender for refusing to help me move a table after I'd spent an hour helping him prep the bar. Didn't regret it one bit and didn't have to do any recovering since we're both the type to blow up and then move on.

like

Glad you guys moved on. Yep - sometimes you just gotta blow up and move on!

We have all been there. Especially, when guests go ballistic over the dumbest stuff. I just remind myself that they look crazy not me and after they leave I’ll probably never see them again. Looking back now it makes me laugh. Lady complains her ice water is too cold, another one says her plate is too small, the food came out too fast. Or my favorite when they want to sit outside then demand free food because there are bugs outside!

I’m struggling to find a full time job right now. I have 16 months of internship experience at a Big4, a 4 month internship at a well known bank and a 12 month internship at a boutique consulting firm.

My gpa is subpar (3.2/4.0) but I have strong extracurriculars and have been working full time while taking full time classes.

Any advice on what I can do to land a solid fu time offer?

Been working on mostly (about 70%) public sector policy and strategy at Big 4 for most of my career. Often go up against MBB on RFPs and have a decent win rate. Would I be too senior to come in as a lateral hire? I guess it’s all about client networks at this level, and being government, it’s locationally dependent - so which markets have need?

I had quite the day the other day. Coustmer comes in and then ends up leaving with a grossed out look on his face just for him to put in a complaint about my appearance...he down right called me some nasty things for no reason. Still feeling gross about it. He was upset for no reason as far as I'm concerned.

So I'm fairly new to the restaurant business; only in like 4 years (only two concepts). Both have been pure chaos that causes so much stress and anxiety. Is this industry wide or am I just unlucky with the 2 concepts I've experienced so far?

Check the overtime laws for your state!!

I just recently worked 58.6 hours in a week, weekly pay, nice OT profit right? Depends on where you live.

In Iowa, there is no Overtime pay mandate, the overtime pay is at the discretion of the business. I received 58.6 hours of base pay for the week.

If the company makes less than $1 million per year or does not engage in intercontinental sales, the company is not required to pay the overtime rate of time and a half, just your base rate.

So I work as an assistant manager at a restaurant for the past 9 months. I've worked in restaurants for the past 6 years science I was 16. Now I'm 22. I went to a trade school for media and film. I got a dream opportunity to work in the field making about the same or 10% more. I told myself the only reason I'd leave this company is for this type of job. Should I take the chance at this job and leave the restaurant that is on the rise and growing?
