I'm still pretty green (started consulting last spring), and I'm not sure if I should be doubling down on one area or getting exposure to everything I can. Did specializing early help your career, or did you wait?

Get cross industry and cross functional experience early. Find what you enjoy. Include AI.

I highly specialized in coding in one language early on and it gave me such a strong foundation that helps me 20+ years later. Then data engineering and eventually data science. Added in AI and I'm able to have a conversation across every major practice area.

If I could do it over I would have picked better industries to focus on and would have sped up jumping skills, but data science wasn't super mature when I decided to go into data engineering so 🤷‍♂️. I delayed going to leadership, but now that I'm here, I'm okay with it.

Consulting specifically, you need to be trust worthy and have soft skills. You'll become invaluable.

I learned everything so I can be the jack of all trades

I was semi-forced into learning a lot of different tech early on. I worked for a few smaller firms and we were always implementing bleeding edge tech. I showed a knack and willingness to do it.

Early in your career it may seem to hurt you a little as you won’t be a master of anything, but as you grow you’ll become a jack of all trades but a master of a few.

Follow the trends and don’t get left behind. Never a bad thing to learn as much as you can. If you double down in an area be sure about career prospects in that area.

Advice when looking for Tech Consulting internships in Chicago or DC Metro? My GPA (3.04) has disqualified me from most major companies. I've opted to focus my efforts into my student organizations and helping others reach their goals, in doing this I compromised for a B average. Are there any firms that will accept recommendation letters with the application? The networking route is also something I am exploring, but haven't had much success thus far. Any help is welcome!
