Do not do this if you plan to have any kind of real future at a firm (and possibly beyond that). It is not really a matter of prestige because a staff attorney position is so different than a clerkship. In the second circuit staff attorneys primarily work on only two things: immigration cases and habeas petitions. Basically a place for cases that require more knowledge of the arcane procedural rules for those two areas of the law and where the requested relief (mostly from the immigrant or prisoner) are overwhelmingly denied. Unless you want to work in those two areas for your career this is likely to be mostly a dead end. I’m a former 2d circuit clerk so I’m familiar with how the court operates.
Stay at your firm.
I’d think you’d want to stay at your firm, unless you want to move into a government role.
