What kind of copywriting? What kind of firm? I think we need a little more to go on before anyone can give any meaningful advice. But in general, applying through a website is a dead end for creative positions.
Thank you for the tip about recruiters. I have looked up articles and spoken to folks about the ins and outs of the industry, but the info I’ve gotten has been very inconsistent. I’m definitely persistent, and have dealt with the ghosting and unanswered emails. If I email a recruiter and they don’t answer after a month, would you recommend I call or email again?
Or the completely online job propulsion that is better than the 1 year portfolio school I attended . Or if you are in New York or LA there are a la carte courses you can take till your portfolio is solid. Other cities like Austin, Seattle, and probably others have courses too. You don't have to break the bank to become a writer, you just need a plan.
Thank you very much. I will definitely check them out
Tip #1: stop calling them “firms.” They’re “agencies.” That’s how people who are part of the business refer to them. Unless you’re looking to work at places like Accenture or Deloitte, in which case, yes, you should call them Firms.
Go to www.jobpropulsionlab.com and take their free course on building your creative career. They also have a free career critique
Thank you!
Portfolio school is a school dedicated to helping you create a portfolio. Like Miami ad school or creative circus.
Google them, go to their student showcase sections and compare your book to theirs. If theirs are way better, you might want to consider a portfolio school of some sort.
Another strong option is VCU
Don’t bother with indeed. We use them for tech roles, not for creative. Apply online but also enlist recruiters to do the marketing for you. You don’t pay them anything to rep you. We only pay them if we hire you. It’s free marketing you should look into. Find all the recruiting firms at work in your city and connect with them all.
Yea, I know the job search takes a while. I’m expecting an approximately 6 month ordeal. As for reaching out to recruiters, thank you for warning me that they may not want to promote me. Either way, I’m going to try - it sounds like the consistent input here is “apply online but also speak to folks at the company to hit ‘em from both ends”.
Go to LinkedIn and find out who the creative directors are at that agency. Invite them to Link, and introduce yourself directly. And if they don’t have a position for you, ask if they might refer you to creative directors at other agencies. The network you establish early in your career will serve you well for years.
Good luck to you.
Thank you for this advice. I will definitely do that

I do have a portfolio that has some spec work as well as projects I’ve done in both grad school and my current/soon-to-be-previous job. What exactly is portfolio school?
