In my 50s. Was recently part of a RIF. COBRA is $2,900/month (market place is similar). I feel like standing on a busy street with a sign that says “will work for health insurance”. I have plenty of savings, but most is in the market - don’t want to pay capital gains.

Sorry to hear that. I am in similar situation. So frustrated with the ageism I am encountering on the daily basis at the moment.

Assuming you do not have any expensive chronic medical issues, you can delay enrolling in COBRA for up to 90 days. This way, if you find a job within that period and stay healthy, you don't need to pay for COBRA. This will also give you time to research other plans with less coverage that should have lower premiums. The only caveat is that if you do need to enroll in COBRA, the premiums will be retroactive to your separation date.

Talk to health insurance agents they’re able to find much more affordable plans

Oh, and the plan should be as follows:
1) start 2-3 corps that are tied to an anon trust.
2) one employs you so that you have legit w-2 confirmable employ.
3) business expenses. Shall I say it again?
4) get really, really aggressive and perhaps a bit outrageous. Your peers will admire you for having the courage to do so. You will succeed.
5-a-b-c-d) book the new corp-paid health policy under one of the corps.

Anything more?

I'm sorry to hear that, OP.

I'm curious why your COBRA is that high? I take it that this isn't just for you but covers spouse / SO and dependants

May not be applicable this year, but if your income is low next year, I believe that you'll qualify for federal subsidies which makes coverage through ACA more affordable. I have been looking into this myself but kot 100% sure how this works.

Wow, that is a LOT. Hope at least that coverage is very good with no deductible.

What about a nice age discrimination lawsuit?

I was in a similar position in 2023. The marketplace plans can be prorated based on your anticipated future earnings, so you can lower your monthly rate up front and then true up at tax time if you earn more than forecast. I had BCBS before RIF so called them directly and they referred me me to an independent advisor who was also an agent in my state and walked me through the process.

Try the exchange. Way better price, and you don’t have to opt into cobra for 90days
