I am a first year associate in Biglaw. I have been put on an improvement plan to increase my billable hours. My supervisors have commented that have not been getting work because I need to improve my efficiency. I am willing to do what it takes to improve but wonder how to improve my hours when no one seems willing to give me a second chance.
Looking to switch from government to private practice after 12 years. Any insights into the best resources for salary and billable requirements for firms in the KC are?
Opinions and any information regarding billable hours and quality of work life at Stockwell, Harris, Woolverton & Helphrey...anything info appreciated!
Anyone have slow months where you burn through a lot of your allotted pro bono/professional development hours to keep hitting minimum daily hours? The past few weeks have been like this for me. Should I be concerned (I.e., will this reflect poorly on me, come review time? Will I have dug myself too much of a hole if I keep burning my non-billable hours?) I’ve been asking partners if I can assist in any projects so I can fill my plate, but I’ve only gotten small (4-6 hour) tasks handed my way.
Anyone else have to do mandatory “non-billable” hours? I just lateraled and this is blowing my mind. The ramp up has also been slow. Any tips?
Anyone else completely mail it in after giving their 2 weeks? Major senioritis for me rn. Probably had 2 billable hours today. Maybe
What is your hourly billable rate and title?
Ah! If the clients ever realize the number of billable hours wasted on making slides just ‘look’ pretty!!!!
Any reviews of working at DLA Piper? Looking for London specifically but also interested to know of any other experiences/reviews. Salaries, billable targets et al
Which offer would you choose? 1) $135k, 1900 billable hours, formidable and growing mid-sized firm in the city; or 2) $145k, 2000 billable hours, biglaw but not a prestigious one?
Need advice for resigning while on bench. I already have a start date with the new employer. Should I do a traditional two week notice or give <=1 week notice instead? My goal is to not burn bridges, but I also don’t want to get let go on the spot since I have nothing to “wrap up” besides HR tasks. I’ve read on here that sometimes they will let you go day of and pay you out for two weeks but I don’t see why any firm would do that for somebody not currently performing billable work...
Laughing in billable hours
Real talk: does anyone else find all the bragging about super high billable hours kind of sad? There is more to life and it just reads like life not being lived. 😔
What's everyone hoping to get for Christmas? I got my present early: five months of billable work to start off 2016.
Non-political poll - how many non-billable hours have you logged so far this year? I’ll start: 143
Ever been let go before your billable time entries were in? Was let go today and not all of my time made it in as it was due next week. I’m expecting a heavy payout but I’m wondering if they can withhold since my billables are not in? Seems like their loss at this point.
Curious about how many hours plaintiffs litigation attorneys work on average per week. I’m a defense attorney and billable hours don’t make for the best work life balance. Thanks in advance.
I’m a 2017 associate in NYC biglaw. I logged approx. 2300 billable hours in 2019. Is that light, normal or heavy in the biglaw market for RE associates at my level? Thanks in advance for thoughts.
What matters more - billable hours or quality of work? It seems like I have a good reputation for always being available, but personally, I don't think I am doing my best work as I'm overloaded. Does billing well matter more than quality work? Just started in the spring as midlevel.
Is there an appropriate way to turn down an assignment because it is non-billable? Two of the partners I work for keep asking me to write client bulletins and articles with them, which is great, but now I’m starting to worry about meeting my billable hours requirement.
Does anyone notice that their students are extra talkative since returning to the classroom? It makes sense and is natural, but sometimes I wish I had that mute button back! Is that bad?
I induce meaningful learning in my classroom by using concrete situations in the world as a resource to illustrate the learning goals of my lessons.
Trying to fill out resignation on HR portal. I guess this is the new employee retention strategy.
Does increase in salary give satisfaction ? Because human are greedy and thinks to get more 🧐
And once again, grand prix at the Effies goes to a non-profit - not saying the work wasn’t highly effective or meaningful (it was, major kudos) but still a bit disheartening hearing them present the winning case as an idea the agency came up with and then went cold calling to find a client/org for. When there’s business-driving creativity being done on big/hard clients. Lots of other wins were for non-profits though so that’s the industry I guess 🤷♂️🤷♀️

I’m a data scientist getting around 160k total comp at a big 4 consulting firm, with 150k base. A FAANG is offering me 188.5k total (135k base + 40k stocks + 13.5k bonus). The FAANG is a much better name especially in my field, but I feel like the base comp is significantly lower?
Hi 🐠 - currently in a transformation role in industry (3 YOE) - I’m interviewing for EY Finance Transformation (Senior), but I also have an in with KPMG Strategy (Senior). I have just over 3 years of experience (2.5 as an Analyst and .5 as a software engineer) and all doing .Net coding. I live in the Denver area, and work remote. What salary is everyone getting for that kind of position? I make 97,000 with a 10% profit sharing bonus (up to 10%). I've also only been with my company under 6 months and got a raise when I got my current job. Any thoughts?
Does anyone have any tips to get back into a healthy lifestyle after giving yourself a break for a few days. I had been doing really well for the last 2-3 months, was feeling great and lost about 20lbs. I went away for the weekend and didn’t go crazy but let myself have cocktails and dessert and now I’m having a hard time getting back into the habits I had developed. I feel sick but I keep making bad choices
Can someone please help me navigate concerns about the vaccine? Literally all I hear from Fox News zombies saying big pharma and Bill gates are pushing the vax for personal profits only and Covid is not that deadly. What has worked with those in the inner network circle? What hasn’t? My pregnant wife who is nurse received both doses and I think a couple relatives believe the baby is going to be a cyborg.
How many of you use virtual backgrounds on your video calls? Realized most of my teams and clients do not use them.
Need some recommendation on shorts and joggers to wear at home but good enough to go to grocery stores and run errands
Anyone here have success with using meal prep services while on the road and having the meals shipped to the hotel? Getting seriously burnt out on eating out and trying to track calories/macros
Does anyone know if work extracurricular activities count for MBA applications in lieu of volunteer activities (e.g., Committees advising leadership, mentoring responsibilities for interns, etc.)
Just received cousin's invite to her wedding and it's on a Sunday. It's not necessarily a destination wedding but is in a city that neither she nor her family, nor her partner's family lives, so everybody has to fly + get hotels. I'm annoyed because I think it's a but disrespectful to your guests to make them all travel and do it on a Sunday so people have to take time off work Monday in order to attend. I know I don't have to attend, but shouldn't it be convenient for guests?
Are all IT Audit ( Big 4?Risk assurance, PwC DAT, PwC Tech Risk) have a year long busy season? I am curious as to my firm busy season is now really “busier season” because we have been legit busy all year
