Pro: Job security, wlb, flexibility, benefits, pension
Cons: Lack of growth, bad employees don’t get weeded out, work is reactionary to the economy, minimal bonuses, bureaucracy
Subject Expert
Pros: stability, decent pay at higher levels, ok pension, some good to excellent health insurance plans, TSP match is decent.
Cons: Pay ceiling, often glacial pace of advancement, career mobility can be hard, pension has declined substantially since 2012, some insurance plans are bad, politics can be horrendous, the capability and caliber of colleagues can be exceedingly variable, typically less flexibility than consulting, pace of work is often glacial, red tape sets the tone for everything
This is all for the feds, I have no experience with state or local government.
My experience and that of my partner, YMMV:
Me - 25 years in local government, well compensated white collar work. Low to moderate stress. The dynamics of personalities and political considerations are as important if not more so than quality work. Wide variation in quality of coworkers. I’ve never felt the anxiety of a layoff. Longevity is key, minimum of 20 years to make the long term value of the pension worthwhile.
Partner - similar length in federal service. All the same things as above. Pension value after 25-30 years. More professional movement based on a much larger organization.
DM me if you have further questions.
