I was at Slalom prior to BCG. Slalom is what you make of it. It is a great place for people who like to coast or just like to do their 40 hours. However, if you are looking to get a good bonus, promotion or a bump in pay, you’ll be working an extra ~10 hours on internal work (sales without comp, practice initiatives and general company wide work). If someone says they got a top bonus or base pay without working more than 40 hours, they probably have a super unique skill or know someone in leadership (yes, I think slalom is huge on hiring/promoting greatly based off relationships alone).
When transitioning to BCG and even trying big tech, I was told I didn’t have as much experience as they would like in terms of my skills. BCG and big tech companies were shocked that Slalom has senior consultants and below working on so many internal projects, especially sales when we haven’t even become experts in our craft yet!
I’m on the product build side of work and it is very clear Slalom is moving away from product design while heading towards a digital like agency for their designers. I cannot speak to the other practices, but the experience that allowed me to transition to BCG was my internal work like Hacktober.
Now being at MBB, I understand why people say Slalom is more so staff aug. Maybe it was my practice, but I completely agree that Slalom work is less strategy and more so filling in for missing staff on client side. Sure, Slalom still has a great working methodology, but nothing compared to MBB strategy and implementation. I’m confident they will continue to find their way though!
At slalom, on average I was working 55-60 hours due to internal involvement (you have to do internal work to get promoted and a good bonus).
At BCG, I work on average about 40-45 hours per week. We aren’t expected to do internal work unless we are unstaffed. We are rated by our performance here instead of internal involvement. My workday is more intense, but once I do my project work I can relax!

Slalom supposedly has great culture, but if you want strategy it’s not the place to be. I’m sure they have a strategy arm, but it’s just not what they’re known for

What do you mean by strategy? MBB?
Slalom is a great company and heard very positive things about their people and WLB. However, it might not be the right place if you're looking to move to MBB.

It’s a good firm. It’s not the absolute best for strategy and is generally considered a step below MBB/B4/T2, but it’s a solid firm that gets its share of strategy work, coupled with a better WLB than many of the more competitive strategy firms. Best of luck!

I know two people who did Slalom -> MBB personally. Not sure what data point the other respondents are using
