Is being good at the job, and well-liked, enough to survive past 8th Year?

In advisory/investigations at a V50. I do really good work - I even sometimes help partners by making BD introductions to contacts. Never failed to hit my hours.

How much help will all that be as I get more senior and if work dries up? Scared I’ll just become an expensive cost and get pushed out - even though I’m happy to bide my time for p’ship. Don’t think there’s space for one more partner in the team…

Not if the work dries up.

I’m in this spot. You need to make a business case for why you should be a partner. At my firm, they essentially place you in of counsel territory otherwise.

like

And firm. At some firms it’s an almost universal step before partnership, at some it’s a place to wait to see if you’ll develop into a partner/market needs etc, at some it’s completely off track.

Curious - is partnership driven by BD needs or market demand (more demand = need one more leader type thing)?

F

If the work dries up or someone can do it much cheaper and the firm needs to cut corners, it doesn't matter how good you are unless you are starting to build your own business. I've seen really good associates and senior attorneys suddenly receive mediocre reviews and eventually get pushed out when the group gets slower or the firm can no longer justify that person's higher rates.

If you’re who I think you are, you’re not actually well liked. But it may not be you.

Now my main question, can I try to switch on Cloud Architect or some other similar cloud roles?

How do you deal with unresponsive summers? I’m a junior and overseeing my first project with summers (5 in total). Two are unresponsive and do not acknowledge my emails. Do I need to make it clear that I expect acknowledgement when I assign work? The other three don’t have a problem with this, so I’m not sure what it is.
