Yes. It's one of the only times you'll truly be able to get a break. That is definitely a bit of a yellow flag. There's no reason a firm should be that inflexible when it comes to start date if they're in a healthy spot.
Tell them you need 8 weeks so 6 weeks feels like a gift. 😉 I had this happen once. I told a new employer I was feeling some burnout from my previous job and that I needed to take some time off before starting. Their suggestion was to immediately leave my position at that time and just start with them because they’re “different.” I stood my ground and told the new place I would pass on the job if they didn’t allow me a minimum of 30 days between. They ended up telling me the job would be there when I was ready to come. And it was. If the new place doesn’t feel right before you even start, that might be a sign to use your 4-6 weeks to keep looking for a place that feels like a better fit. Hope everything works out for you!
Ew. Tell them you need 6 weeks. 🚩

I wish things were different, but I have never heard of a firm waiting that long for someone. Usually they’ll give you a few weeks to wrap up your old job.
Take the time off. If you don’t do it now, you won’t get the chance to until you find another job. If they really want you, they will give you the time and space to reset and refresh. It’s not a good sign if they don’t want you to take the time off (goodness knows you deserve it). Also don’t feel bad about it. They need a warm capable body to do the work. You’re investing in them as much as they are investing in you.
Just make sure you’re covered with health insurance. To me, the only downside of funemployment is the risk of being uninsured during that time if something were to happen.
Yeah definitely take the time off
In this market I wouldn’t be surprised if a firm rescinded an offer if they couldn’t have a near-immediate start.
This absolutely could happen these days. Weigh how much you need/want this new job, if it is going to put you in a similar position as the one you’re wanting to leave versus whether you can wait for a new job that you feel better taking. If they are pressuring you now, it will not be better once you’re actively in the workplace.
It feels like forever but the recruiter I’ve been talking to is saying jobs should be back booming toward the end of the first quarter 2026.
Yes.
