Is it a red flag if a company offers to pay for a class / training, but says if you do this you have to stay for x more years? Or is this normal?

What kind of training are we talking here? I think if it’s an expensive course, certification or degree it could be fair. Why would a company pay for all of that and then risk you walking away?

Similar to a sign on bonus

This is normal.

Depends on what it is. Where ive had this apply to me it was ‘stay until x date or repay $y’. Repayment is usually a sliding scale, ie y gets less the closer you get to x.

It should be presented as a repayment obligation. You should never be obligated to stay in a job you don’t want.

Be careful if the repayment obligation is so large that you could not easily repay.

This is standard

Don’t consultancies do this regularly? Pay for an MBA, but require two years of work afterwards?

Why would it be a red flag for them to expect something in return for doing something for you?

It seems sketchy to me. In my mind the only to leave would be if I felt I was no longer fairly compensated so it seems more like a “lock” at a cheap labor price.

Red flag af

funny

That’s normal, it’s called a clawback

like

For example, If they paid for the class today and you put in your resignation tomorrow, they’d expect you to pay them back for the class. If you stay 1 year (or 2 years, per their terms) then none needs to be paid back. It’s similar to the sign on bonus terms and such.

Very normal. A company that invest in their employees training/education want a return on their investment. They want to see their employees adding value and contributing to their organization.

Hello, I recently was reached out to by an in-house recruiter at a similar but slightly different company than the one I currently work for. The recruiter provided a base range and an OTE range. The lower end of that range is what I am currently making. The higher end of that range is almost 200k more than my current comp. The role is almost identical. I wasn’t looking to move, but that higher end range would set my family up very nicely for our goals. But I am happy at my current company. Help?

I am doing a poll of sorts. I got an offer from Deloitte as a Tax Consultant II in their Hedge Fund Group and an offer from PwC as an Experienced Associate in their Asset Wealth Management Group.
