Is there any demand for this skill? 1. Secondary Research/ Literature Review - Ability to find & collect science facts & data from internet, analyze it and bring insights from it. And present in it very simple & consized manner. Note: Please don't call blindly this as data scientist skill. I am not only taking about quantitative data. Ugh so feel this! I personally decided to lay off the gas on the effort I was putting in at work… and guess what? It seems like 1. No one has even noticed and 2. Im able to set boundaries way easier now. I take a lunch break to go run errands or go on a run etc. or last week i even met my husband for a lunch date. A novel idea! We’ll see how this turns out for me but it’s worth it to not kill myself for a job.
Oh man, being a mom, where no decision will ever feel like the “right” one! Do men ever ask this of themselves? Anyway…
If you can find an environment where you can have some semblance of balance (respected hours and reasonable breaks in the day if you need them, travel you can plan for) then you might find yourself at a level of productivity and efficiency you never know was possible - therefore giving yourself the chance to move up.
I wasn’t able to find that in agency life, and when Covid came along, remote work was nearly impossible with my kids at the ages they are. So I’m consulting for the time being to keep up my skills and relationships, with the eventual goal of returning either in house or to an agency leadership role.
Best of luck to you, and whatever decision you make, own it, and give yourself grace where you feel like you’re “lacking” because you’re just where you need to be.
Just recently I made the jump from being FT sales person to FT SAHM. I couldn’t keep up with my very demanding, always-on job and was working insane hours and feeling constantly stressed out. I realized this was no way to live my life and the money I was making wasn’t going to make me happy. Granted, now that I don’t have a paycheck, it’s been an adjustment but I don’t think I will regret this decision in the long run. Covid definitely didn’t help since I was 100% WFH and could constantly hear what was going on with our nanny and my two children.
Whatever you do, just know that nothing has to be permanent. You can always pivot at any point!
Everything is temporary. What can you never do again?
Such a good point..
It’s totally up to you. I was bored out of my mind during maternity leave and knew I wanted to go back to work full speed ahead. That said I do set clear boundaries and make sure I have a few hours of being fully present with my kids after work every day. Then I log back on after bedtime if need be.
It depends on what the new role means. Is it a lot more travel, crazier hours? Depends on what kind of balance you are looking for.
Go for the promotion. Are you actually working less now than you would be in a more senior role? Probably not… at least then you’d have more money to help buy better balance in other ways, plus a little more gravitas , which helps if you have to say no.
I’ve gone down to 4 days a week in a role that is still challenging but completely respects my day off. It’s a game changer from when I was foot on the gas working 60 hr+ a week. I’m not sure when I will be able to put my foot back on the gas again, but I’m grateful to have the opportunity to be part time and lean into meaningful work while also having more “mom” time than ever.
There is no one size fits all answer to this question but this is what has worked for me. Good luck!
