It’s normal to regret a clerkship in general
I regret it still, now a few months in. Not clerking in general, but clerking for my judge and in this city. It is a good resume line for a decently well known judge, and not a nightmare situation—but it’s not great either and I liked my job I was doing before a lot more. I don’t think I’ll regret clerking when it’s all said and done, but I do think I’ll regret prioritizing clerking ASAP as opposed to being flexible on the year but pickier as to the clerkship/city. Also my judge does no days off which is a huge pain.
what's wrong with the city? too small?
it's not common but it definitely happens. mind sharing why you feel regret? maybe we can help/assuage
Not sure if it’s normal but it’s understandable to feel some regret, especially if it’s off to a rocky start and you have friends working at firms making bank while you make way less.
The first three months of my clerkship made me feel horrible (my judge had a difficult personality, things were very chaotic) but finding other law clerks you can lean on and getting to know other judges makes a big difference.
Clerkships are worth it in the end because you learn so much. Hang in there and do your best.
OP here. I recently started a district court clerkship after nearly two years in Biglaw in a major market. Thus far, I have mixed feelings about my decision to clerk. I like my judge and my co-clerk, but the work isn’t that interesting or challenging and I am struggling with the drastic difference in compensation. I often struggle with regret and it is sapping my ability to enjoy the clerkship experience. I understand the long term value of a clerkship, but it feels like I took a step backward in lifestyle and compensation for a limited benefit.
gotcha I see. the work not being interesting seems like the biggest issue, and I think that means you probably prefer advocacy work compared to academic/law school type of stuff. the good news is that means you'll enjoy the rest of your career and won't really miss clerking! and yes, the career benefit is massive for a biglaw litigator, and your future self will thank you
Almost 2 years in, and I still regret it lol
