The reason it's worse is that today, we witnessed decades of hard work and passion mean nothing.
Agencies that defined the industry were folded into a gluttonous institution.
But, the way the end broke my heart. There was no humanity in the way humans were treated today. Honor is dead.
2008 was a breeze compared to this. I worked on Citi at the time - which was quite wild all things considered.
Lived through the dot com bubble burst and 9/11 too.
Never thought we’d rebound each time. But we did. There’s hope…
This is the take I’ve been looking for 🙏🙏🙏
Unfortunately, the “contraction” of regular, full time jobs in advertising is far more noticeable now, especially on the creative side. More importantly, the outlook for these types of careers is considerably less bright. In 2008, the reduction was sharp and quick, due to the recession. And then it slowly came back. Over the past 10 years, the creative that clients want, the sheer volume and personalization, the versioning for the almost infinite number of media outlets, and the short lifespan of a creative piece, has transformed our industry in some fundamental and unfortunate ways.
I’d love to know because I managed to weasel my way in around 2011 and just got laid off earlier this year. It seems pretty rough now but maybe for different reasons.
Ugh… I don’t know. I think anyone’s opinion will only reflect their personal experience. I don’t know what the actual numbers are in comparison. I do remember 2008 as a scary time though. Right now it’s no cakewalk either.
wtf man… can a finance major or someone smart please instill some hope here. this is all starting to feel end-of-times-y
You could do 100 things without resorting to hospitality. Granted not at this particular time of year perhaps. You should do deep research and go client side. Things will start to move towards the end of Jan. Are you art or copy?

Way worse, unless you mean right after the crash. But the general state of advertising agencies then was much much healthier.
It wasn’t THAT bad in 2008. The agency I was at had some good years in that time.
If it’s that bad, it just means the pendulum swings back to really really good…right? RIGHT
No, but nice try.
