I am not interested in the points. I am more interested in living. Wanted to understand if there is a pattern that others have seen. I have flown into PHX many times but these two times restored my faith back in god.
Go arounds (aborted landings) are not particularly uncommon.
When it’s very hot you can get thermals with strong updrafts or downdrafts that make this more likely.
LAS gets like this too. Nearby mountains don’t help, not sure if PHX has that as well.
Overall though it has been decades since something like this has caused an incident.
Better on airport weather monitoring equipment means that if things are really bad they won’t clear for landing.
It has been over 15 years since a mainline us airline had a fatal crash, we are in the golden age of air travel safety in the us.
You may be right, thermal is a possibility. My AA flight was on a hot day in June (110 deg +) and SW was on a 100 degree day so it could have been a thermal.
I had an aborted landing flying into BOS. Was because another plane wasn’t crossing the runway fast enough. Thought I was going to die that day. Will never forget that feeling.
If you guys think aborted landings are bad, try an aborted takeoff 😬 Have been through both and would take the landing any day.
The hot air on the ground can cause that so it makes sense for PHX
PHX always has turbulence, it due to their geography and the hot/ cold wind patterns it creates. That’s why they get crazy sand storms. But even flying over Phoenix is a bumpy ride.
I’ve flown into and out of Phoenix probably a dozen times, and it’s always been smooth. That being said, I’ve never flown in/out during May-Sept
