How would that work exactly? Some ppl use online banking because they dont want to use the app, or have the app. If you don’t have the app, there isn’t any way to authenticate the 2nd step. In case of apple, you’re using the ios, essentially requesting your phone for 2nd step authentication if you wanna log in elsewhere. I know some ppl have flipphones, which is wild but still.
They mean like using third party authentication apps for the second factor as a push notification or TOTP. Rather than the banks app being the authenticator app too.
I would imagine the subset of folks without a smartphone but using online banking is pretty small and most could use a desktop app or hardware token.

Banks are still operating in the 20th century. But they also cover essentially all fraud, so I wouldn't worry about it.
Part is probably they don’t wanna pay for t1 support that can handle authenticator issues.
And folks who are at risk of sim swapping are using banks that don’t rely on SMS
We will be soon! The problem with a lot of this is the friction hi-tech causes the general population to endure.
Unfortunately most banks are implementing to the lowest common denominator and not giving “options” a la Robinhood.
Also, keep in mind banking in the USA still uses the insanity of checks and waste an incredible amount of money on fighting fraud due to them. They are very behind on technology which is never improved due to most banks buying a banking system from vendors that are squeezing their turnips for the past 30-40 years.
For us, going to have to come to Florida!
The friction introduced to customers with Authenticator apps is no match for the world of pain when all your financial accounts are hacked and drained while you have no phone access during a sim swap attack. Trust me. I’ve been there.
