I’ve been a paralegal for 20 years, and my attorney just retired. I interviewed for a new firm last week, and they offered me a position with a salary that is $30,000 more than I’m currently earning. The new job also comes with better benefits. I should be excited, but I’m feeling overwhelmed about changing jobs after so many years. Has anyone made such a shift later in their career? Is it normal to be nervous?

In 15 years I had 2 main bosses. The first for 5 then the second for 10. Leaving both times was extremely needed and unquestionably the right option, but to say I was terrified would be an understatement.

I'm sorry you are stressed. Wishing you only the best!

Totally normal to feel overwhelmed, especially after being in one place for so long. It’s a big change, but honestly, the fact that they’re offering you $30,000 more and better benefits is a pretty clear sign this could be the right move. I made a similar switch myself, and while it took a bit to adjust, once I got settled in, I realized it was the best decision. You might feel a little anxious at first, but it should be smooth sailing in no time. Good luck!

This is way too low for working as a paralegal over 20 years. You likely have the skills and experience to make much more money. I'd look into finding a mentor or skills training in asking for what you need. If jobs don't offer enough find one that will. Have the confidence to seek more. You can do it! Anyone who's worked as a paralegal for 20 years is more than worth the money. Good luck! Don't settle.

IMO leaving always sucks but you get used to the new place. I wouldn’t let fear get in the way. Make the jump if your gut says so. Things will work out.

Think of it this way so you’re not terrified, you were seriously underpaid. That should start a fire somewhere. Congratulations and good luck!

I have changed jobs every 6-7 years and as long as you go in letting them know you need 2 to 3 months to acclamate and get to know the clients or if it's a new area of law for you then it'll take the pressure off to go in looking like you're at your best. I always tell them to give me 3 months and I'll be we earning my own salary.
