Thanks for this, writing this! I am in your same boat! I’ve been in it for 7 months and I am looking for the same. I have been trying to see if there is coaching out there because I really don’t have the support where I am.
Product is not a very well defined area. Factors like company (startup/mature), size of team, different product roles, etc matter in defining these roles. PO role in itself is scrum specific, i mean create, prioritize and arrange user stories in product backlog and release sprints, ensure development team is clear on what to work on next, attend agile and scrum meetings to ensure development is aligned with roadmap set by product manager, give release feedback to development, resolve any release related issues. I would suggest work closely with your product manager if you are not clear on role. Building that relationship and trust certainly wont hurt.
I have been a PM for about a year now and I still have no clue what my role is. I definitely think it’s based on the leaders you have and how defined your role is. My role was never defined and now as a PM I am struggling while the other PMs I interact with came with a fully defined role and seem to be thriving lol 😭
As a fellow PO, I will say the ambiguity is unfortunately part of the job a lot of the time. However, over time you get more comfortable with It and it gets much better.
Honestly largely boils down to flexibility and curiosity. If you’ve got both of those, you’re in a good spot.
I’ve been in my role as a product manager for 8+ months and am still looking for clarity in my role too. I’d be happy to take any tips on how to be a fully functional PM and how to work with the PO.
I feel fully functional, but I still feel this way. Nothing is set in stone and I end up playing different roles depending on the situation.
I think roles like PO and PM are very flexible. Each company defines these roles on their own terms. In the end it’s all about who owns the product more.
I agree with the above this can greatly vary from organization to organization, due to maturity, company structure, size, and about a million other things. I’m currently at a smaller company, recently (1.25yrs) Agile transformation. I feel like a jack of all trades often shifting from support to client feedback to roadmap presenting to backlog refinement. There is no shortage of things to do and you have to be very good at compartmentalizing and organization to stay on track.
