If you want to pivot from account management, you could go into sales, project management, or customer success. You've surely got transferable skills you could carry with you. If you've got expertise in data analysis, or knowledge of a specific industry, that would give you a further advantage.
I’ve pivoted both directions in the past, and am getting ready to move from being an AM to a Hybrid management/AE type of role with a new company. I feel what you’re saying about the constant juggling act weighing you down. It’s different at every company. My current role is really exceptional in most ways but my motivation for this change is to get away from all the service tasks and move back to somewhere where I can be less distracted from the big time, hunting atmosphere of chasing high dollar deals. Account management offers that at some companies, including my current one, it’s just mired in endless small, inconsequential tasks that can sometimes take the fun out of sales. You start to feel like a service clerk.
If I were you, I’d really think about what you want from your next role. Think about how connected you are to your current product/industry. Think about what’s important to you now and what you think will change over the next 5-7 years. I’d also list out your strengths and be honest about your weaknesses. It’s a lot easier to find the right role when you have a very clear definition of the type of role that will not only make you happy, but leverage your strengths.
Not to be cliche, but where do you see yourself in 5 years? Think about where you are in your life right now and where you think/want to be in five years. Account management at different companies can vastly differ. If you want to stay at your current company, see what marketing, sales, program management roles are open and chat with those in the role. You don’t have to disclose you’re interested in making a change, just have a casual coffee chat with them to gauge their workload and what their day to day looks like.
