Deloitte experienced hires, who all received written offers and in process of visa/ onboarding, have you heard back anything about hiring freeze? Or recruiter asked you to delay joining date?
My visa got submitted couple of days back and waiting for decision. When I reached out to recruiter to give her an update and mentioned once there’s decision will discuss on the start date before putting my 2 weeks, she mentioned “Yes, we should talk before you put notice” - Am I overthinking? Leave the newer hire out of the conversation completely when you have that talk. Focus on how you’ve grown during your time there and what you’ve done that warrants higher pay.
I don’t agree with it happening, but the truth is a lot of companies just pay more to bring somebody new in. They aren’t nearly as focused on putting money into retention. The best thing you can do if the company isn’t going to consider a raise is to go somewhere else and be the new person making more for the same work.
The only way I got the fair pay is by moving out and finding another job. Otherwise trust you will be in circles. I was told yes you might deserve more but this is how we budgeted this role so take it or leave it. So I stopped asking and started looking for somewhere else
We are paid what we accept. This situation is common. If you bring it up, it's best to be prepared to leave. It can go sideways very quickly.
In a past management position, I was training a person who was making more than me. I found out when a disgruntled HR person sent out an email showing how much everyone made. I went to management, they raised my pay to what he was making, but the damage was already done. I went and found another job with their competitor, and their company is no longer in business.

It’d be hard for me to not sound bitter !
There is only a pay discrepancy from your perspective. Your employer knows how much it pays you and your new coworker.
You would likely accomplish throwing your coworker under the bus if you attempt to use comp detail provided to you unwisely in an attempt to negotiate a off cycle non promotion pay raise.
The same thing happened to me recently, I started a new job and found out that a guy with no experience is making the exact same as me. Companies can pay people whatever they want. If you really want to earn what you’re worth, you’ll probably have to take your experience somewhere else.
Also be prepared for them to say no, how would you react then? If you want to leave, now may be your time
Is the new hire more talented than you
I think you can bring up your ask and talk about the value you offer. Don’t mention the new hire. What is the pay difference btw?
This could be a tactic to replace the old staff, as the older staff might have more people, and so the newer person who is being paid more, will then be doing the work of 2 - 3 people, who will be fired, or might leave on their own when their salaries aren't being raised even after years or months of hard work. Also, the "new hire" would eventually become a sacrificial lamb.
