I just returned to industry. The head hunter told me to minimize “my Accenture experience when interviewing”. 😆
I’m now making 2X what I made at Accenture. I should have left years ago.
Pigeonholed how? Health, consulting? What does that mean?
To give more context—my background is in healthcare consulting on the payer side, primarily focused on implementation, issue resolution, and delivery. I’ve led workstreams, driven cross-functional problem solving, and owned initiatives tied to system/process improvements.
I haven’t formally sat in a “strategy” role (e.g., market assessments, growth strategy), so my experience tends to be read as execution-heavy.
Given that, I’m trying to understand:
1. What roles or firms value this type of experience as a feeder into strategy?
2. Are there specific pivots (internal or external) you’ve seen work for people coming from delivery-heavy backgrounds?
3. Should I be targeting certain types of strategy (ops strategy, payer strategy, transformation) vs. pure corporate strategy?
Would really appreciate any perspective from those who’ve made a similar transition.
Your question is too vague
To clarify—my experience has been heavily on the implementation and delivery side (e.g., leading issue resolution, managing workstreams, and driving execution across systems and stakeholders), particularly in healthcare payer operations.
The challenge I’m running into is that many strategy roles are looking for candidates with more front-end experience—market assessments, growth strategy, operating model design, etc.—and my resume is being read as more execution-focused.
That said, my work has involved a lot of strategic thinking in practice—identifying root causes, shaping solutions, aligning stakeholders, and driving decisions—but I haven’t always framed it that way.
Curious how others have successfully repositioned similar experience or bridged into more strategy-aligned roles.
Focus on healthcare industry Humana etc look at some of their roles and go from there. Find healthcare industries who recognize your Accenture expertise
