I've been working with a U.S. designer via Upwork. She pays me $8.50/h (I'm in Ecuador), but I found out she charges clients $38/h for my work. I’m basically getting 20%. I have 5 years of experience, I’m bilingual, and I do graphic and web design with multiple tools. I know rates vary by region, but still — isn’t this way too low for what I offer?

That sounds like you're being exploited. It would be better if you found your own clients instead of having someone act as an intermediary. I'm not too familiar with Upwork, but perhaps you could set something up there and find work without having the other designer take credit for your work (which is what it sounds like).

Agree with this!

This is so exploitative and sadly par for the course. Your "client" is just middle-manning and taking advantage of your abilities. $8.50 is way too low for graphic design, regardless of location.

like

If your designer is on upwork, can’t you go on upwork and just offer your services freelance? You’re already doing the work that way you could have more clients and have a better income.

like

Have you tried to build up your branding?

If you can sell your design for higher than $8.50/hr but lower than $38/hr, you have a chance to build up your brand and portfolio.

like

Capitalism as designed. A prime example of exploitation is baked in.

We must always educate ourselves on the market rate for any position. Knowing the final price for your labor is beneficial. Negotiate the highest you can.

Was approved for an apartment that was originally listed as no-fee, but just heard from the broker the building isn’t paying the broker’s fee so we would have to pay it. It is one month’s rent but they are saying we can pay just 1/3 of it due to the miscommunication. Thoughts? Is this a scam? Is there room to negotiate?

Saw someone asking about high-rise apartments in Mott Haven earlier. Just moved into a new apartment building here and honestly it’s not as bad as I thought. New buildings are safe and pretty spacious (relatively speaking). Downside is not really much to do around this area and food delivery is not great. Hope this is helpful for any one who is looking at this area.

Hi, I am currently working at Bisleri in a quality control role with 6 YOE. My current CTC is very low (4 LPA) and I have not found any motivation or growth in my role since COVID. I'd like to be in the design industry (Graphic Design or UI UI Design). Currently I am freelancing in my spare time. My question to Design professionals is: how feasible will the switch be? Will I be accepted as an intern/junior designer in my early 30s?

Additional Posts in Salary Negotiations

Interviewing at a dream company, and right from the first interview the recruiter told me we are way off on salary expectations. This was a little bit expected, as the role is requiring a few years less experience than I have and also in a much cheaper market. They already told me the salary range during this first call, but wondering if they like me enough and I get an offer, how I might approach negotiating for more. I would be making much less than I do now, but it is a dream company.

This is absurd. Am I missing some “new way” of doing things? Your take?
