I’ve had a couple of interviews where the team clearly loved me, but the feedback was that my book didn’t match their clients. When you’re hiring for agencies, how often do you take a chance on someone with strong work in different categories versus playing it safe with category experience?

Agencies often play it safe under client pressure; the right one will value versatility. I’ve seen hires made on transferable craft and storytelling, not just category.

It's usually the hiring managers who won't budge - TA will try to be open minded, but at the end of the day it's not our decision. It also depends on how different the category - if you're trying to get in healthcare, you typically need that experience as there are lots of rules and regulations you need to know that make it hard to pivot at a more senior level. If you're looking for a management role without knowing the category, it would be hard to mentor until you got up to speed. If you're trying to switch from liquor to laundry detergent or bubble gum, it shouldn't be that hard. So many variables!

A recruiter from an agency I admire reached out to see if I’m interested in an ACD role. BUT it is for one of their Pharma clients. How can I tell them I’m not interested in that category? I would like to work with them, but on their traditional/consumer brands. I want them to consider me for other opportunities :-/

I’m reviewing my resume getting ready to start my job search and have a question for recruiters, hiring managers. I’m looking for a role brand-side not agency side. Specialist roles aside, such as digital, when you see someone describing themselves as a “generalist marketer” is this a resume you’d pass on? My past roles have been such that I do a lot of marketing projects, tasks etc. but I’m not a specialist. I’m worried if I use this terminology I won’t even be considered for a role. Thank you
