I’ve had an itch to try M&A tax since college. I currently work in a tax team that has pretty good hours outside of Feb-April and pays well, although M&A would probably be like 15% jump in pay. Should I try to pursue it or is this just a “grass is greener” moment? I get along quite well with my current team and see a solid path to M promo/ longer term work here, but at that point M&A would likely be impossible to pursue. I have a CPA, MST and solid experience doing tax research and memos.

You can always go back. I switched as a first year senior, loved it (and the pay), and never wanted to go back. It’s easiest to switch now at your level. If you can give details on city or current firm someone here may be able to help you. I am trying to find internal hires in our compliance group to poach all the time. Way more fun than putting numbers on a form ;)

If you’re good, you’ll always be able to make M wherever you go, but you can’t always go back and be junior enough to try M&A tax.

As you’ve pointed out correctly, hours can be a bit erratic but overall I work less and have less stress in M&A than compliance.

Cool - hopefully some Texas based managers see this and can help you out. You’ve got the ideal background imo.

Yes do it, try to do a rotation at current firm. Your MST will help you out.

Do it. January would be a good time to start.

Is anyone concerned the push for sexual equality in pay without accordant leveling of parental leave is gonna backfire?

Here’s a hypothetical:

A company has 2 candidates, aged 25-30, equal in every respect save one’s a man the other’s a woman. Maybe the woman is a slightly better candidate overall. They’d have equal comp.

Company considers the woman a riskier bet due to possibility she’ll take maternity leave — and considers the man less risky for his ineligibility to take as much leave. 🤷
