If you are shooting for Cravath-scale salary, you get too expensive after 7th year. Around 8th year is when law firms will funnel Associates out of lockstep and actually make you take a significant pay cut to stay around. Even if made partner, you may take a pay cut.
So much of that is very practice, firm, and position dependent.
If firms are looking for lateral associates in the 2-7 year range, and you are more senior, you may be dinged as a candidate because your anticipated salary expectations will likely be over the budget they allocated for the position.
That certainly applies to market paying firms/larger firms in general (there are other seniority related considerations that I won’t touch on).
It may not apply to smaller or medium sized outfits.
You have to look at which recruiters are saying it. Those that focus on Big Law or market paying boutique often say this partially because it’s true and partially because it’s a sales tactic to push their coveted “no moves” unicorns to test the waters.
I would be more concerned if a more general recruiter who has a good handle on a specific market was saying that.
