It's a rumor other firms like to start every recruiting season to win cross offers. We're not going anywhere any time soon.
The gap is, if anything, shrinking in the core strategy business. Bain’s much younger and growing faster than the other two
Don’t worry about this Bain still strong and great - definitely more focused on PE but overall doing just fine
Appreciate your input!
Bain’s not going anywhere. Gap is growing, if anywhere, in the non-strategy parts of the industry (i.e. digital, tech transformations).
Objectively, pure strategy is shrinking, driven by stronger in-house consulting arms and growing client expectations for implementation.
It is much higher margin, but can’t compete in terms of deal size or longevity. There are no $500m pure strategy engagements over 3 years. Shareholders, in this case the partners, like volume and guaranteed income, which is why you see the pivot across consulting.

do you already know you want to be in consulting long term? this seems like a precocious question to ask for someone who just accepted an internship offer haha
I just recently realized IB wasn’t right for me and was fortunate to catch an application deadline, so I’m relatively new to this industry. I’m focused on consulting now and open to doing it long-term so just want to make sure I’m in the best place for myself.

Bain is a great firm. As an ACI, the only difference between the MBBs is whether you will use blue, green or red colour schemes.
We’re pushing much harder at that non-core stuff now from what I’ve seen. Historically that maybe wasn’t the case as we were hesitant to turn on the taps (growth in those areas means hiring more, faster, which brings its own problems).
May have been slower than the other two to get going, but just means there’s a lot of headroom.
Bain is amazing! But there is never any harm in recruiting again just in case so just be prepared for that.
Yes don’t worry OP ur good! Do your Bain internship but also keep networking at McKinsey and BCG over school year just in case u decide to firm hop. Best of luck to u!
You might not last that long in consulting, so keep that in mind as well
