Hey I was in a similar position as you with a previous employer. Feel free to PM me, but word of advice: put everything in writing. Follow up to the review with the truth. Countering every lie. And copy HR. If you meet in person, try and have someone from HR there too, but even if you can’t, recap that meeting in writing and copy HR.
HR is just the damage control police, but they need to see you aren’t to be played with.
Yes, this.
Fight it. You're pregnant and it's hard to find something new during that time. I'd interview while on leave and then bounce.
For background, I've changed jobs while visibly pregnant, twice. It's doable but not easier. If you do it while pregnant, you also won't get leave, so I only got the mandatory minimum of 6 weeks both times. Use your employer while they're using you. Do your job while starting the search
I would leave. Don't wait until things get worse.
Update: My supervisor and I had a meeting to discuss the review. A lot of what she wrote was a flat out lie. For example she said that I repeatedly told her that I did not want to take on more work because I could not handle the work I had. I NEVER said that or anything remotely close to it. I feel like there is nothing I can do about it. There is no way anyone will believe me over her.
Speak to a plaintiffs employment lawyer. This is actionable. Document your side of the conversation in an email to them and request it be placed in your personnel file.
Same thing happened to me and another black associate I know at another big law firm. Everyone told me put everything in writing but that didn’t matter. At the end of the day, the money makers rule decisions.
Do you have an associates committee with an equity partner on it? There should be and if so, I’d talk to them about it. That was the only way I was able to stick up for myself and make the partner who lied on the review apologize and judge me by the quality/timing of my work. It’s different when an equity partner is told about himself by another equity partner.
I’ve also learned that if it’s criticizing the partner, ask another partner (that you’re comfortable with) about how to deliver said criticism. Sometimes it’s better coming from another partner because partners care about how partners view them not how associates view them.
I’m so sorry. A lot of big firms over hire first years intentionally because their business plan is to widow down the class. Make sure to stash some cash because when time get tight they will look for any reason to dump you because inexperienced attorneys are very replaceable.
Advice: is there anyone senior at your firm you have clicked with? If so cultivate that relationship. They could save you from the axe if it comes to that.
Leave. It's hiring season, and your time would be better spent finding a new job.
I am married with 3 kids and I am 5 months pregnant. Idk whether to fight or leave. I want to resign before I get put on a PIP or fired but we need my income to maintain the household. I’d like to find something temporary. I don’t know whether to fight it or just leave.
Fight it AND leave. Looks for other jobs ASAP.
Oh also. Check out the mama attorney on IG, she will have excellent advice for you. She responds to dms or you can call her
