Tax technology…IF you are good at sales and figuring stuff out on the fly
Tax compliance…IF you are book smart
Foundational knowledge/natural talent (refer to my first comment) is what I think would be helpful for someone’s decision between the two
Which are you more interested in? Which one pays better?
For me WLB and career path are more important now
Which are you qualified for?
It depends.
What do you value?
Tax technology is project based, so no compliance deadline. So in general the wlb is much better.
It is definitely more niche, and exit opps are less. Not every company has their on in house tax technology team. Most likely will always be working in PA firm or consulting firms. I have seen many become like product managers though but still serving the clients.
Work is more interesting and fulfilling than compliance I would say.
Tax compliance has better exit opportunities.
