Just accepted a job with a Big 4 company in their SALT group. I have approximately 1.5 years of litigation experience, mostly non-tax (and an MBA). It’s very fair to say I do not have a large basis of tax knowledge.

Any recommendations of resources (treatises, articles, etc.) to read to try and get myself as up to speed as possible? And, more broadly, any general advice about navigating Big4 as a JD?

Thanks in advance!

Don’t listen to these people, you’ll learn and you’ll be okay. Learn the smartcharts for RIA or BNA. Google to learn things - articles come up on topics and you’ll learn as you go. At a Big4 also perfectly acceptable to say that you’re not familiar with something - they will explain.

I recommend starting with IRC 61- the rest will just fall into place!

But seriously how did you get a SALT job with basically no tax experience- yikes. With litigation experience- I would have thought tax controversy. I hope they take it easy on you to start- you’re in for a hell of a learning curve. Ask if they will pay for your LLM.

What does it mean if there’s a NEP at the firm who’s been there for a long time (20+ years), but never got promoted to EP? Never held leadership roles too. Does it usually mean EPs does not like the NEP enough to get promoted?

The NEP has a book of business, though no idea how much it brings in.

Senior attorneys at v100, how common is it for attorneys who start at small firms to lateral to biglaw? Have you worked with any? Conventional wisdom is always that if you don’t start there it’s hard to “trade up”. My coworker and I just did it to two different great v30 firms, and I’m wondering if it’s really that uncommon? Just out of curiosity. We’re not special counsel with special niche skills or anything, just associates. Pitfalls to beware? Positives?

Has anyone dealt with stuffing allocation in a non-hedge fund context? It seems even in the HF world the law is fuzzy in using aggregate reverse 704c principles in stuffing allocations. Like, sure, the market is there but no authority really blessed it (other than some Cravath partner’s article in Tax Notes in 2013). If we are talking asset class that isn’t really like marketable securities but might be able to treat it similarly solely by virtue of, say, valuation on a quarterly basis (contd)
