Welcome to life.
My parents are in their 70s with no retirement plan and I’m an only child.

@ey1 I live in the basement of the home thay I’m expecting to inherit soon. I pay the mortgage and bills, and social security gets them the groceries and fun they need.
What’s there to worry? She’ll work another 20 years and then will move in with you. (I am f 52 and my mom and dad live with me, they watch my children - a bit younger than you. Works out great for everyone)

And yeah, she needs a job. It may, or may not, help her improve the SS payment she earns, depending on what your Dad earns. SS works by calculating benefit on your highest 35 annual salaries.
No retirement funds? My parents are in their 60s with negative net worth (mortgage and credit debt). I gave up trying to change them a long time ago. When they’re old I will have to supplement their social security, and when we are old we won’t get any social security! (Thanks boomers.)
I’m in the same boat 😞
“Social security will take care of me!” 🤡
Get her some gig that pays enough to build up social security credits. It’s not amazing, but it’s better than zero. Plus at her age she will be winning if she just satisfies the minimum criteria and waits till 67 to draw on it.
First gen immigrant and both my parents don't have retirement or savings and still owe 50 k on the house we grew up in
Both are currently unemployed and my father is looking more fragile every time I see him. He works labor and mother doesn't work.
Both my siblings don't work. I'm worried
I feel your pain @A1, my father does manual labor for work and it pains me to see him coming home everyday limping...We unfortunately gotta keep grinding to give them a decent landing pad. Best of luck with you!
They are your parents, help them even if it means you live on the street.
Same boat except my name is on the house because she couldn’t refinance so I’ll be paying off her debts in addition to her retirement...
Try to get her started now and get her to keep in good enough health to postpone retirement to 72 and max her SS.

OP: start reading up on the rules around SS benefits.

Yup, my mom is in her late 60s and my dad is in his 70s. Neither of them have any retirement funds.
