Just gave notice to my managing partner. I have no job lined up. I have no plan. I have no idea what the next step for me is. But I’m feeling so relieved and can’t wait to see what’s next in store for me. I know it won’t be at a law firm.

Omg congrats!!! My husband just did that too (not law but finance). He's been happily doing absolutely nothing productive for 3 months now while I work increasingly insane hours and I want to join him so badly 😭

Do you think you'll search for an another opportunity in law, or look for something completely different?

Is this me from the future?? I hope to be in the exact same position at the end of next month and, while terrified of the unknown, think it’s kind of exciting to start over and open my mind up to literally any other kinds of jobs that I might want to try out!! Congratulations!!

FYI, if an alternate career doesn't immediately develop consider solo practice. Less $ typically but highly flexible and you're the boss. I've enjoyed it.

I'm in the exact same boat - not sure of where I'm going from here. Got a job offer but am not sure it's going to be right for me, though I accepted because I need income... Time off has been VERY helpful in evaluating my life/career options. My last firm was COMPLETELY toxic - so I'm considering whether a different firm will be better or if I need to leave law altogether.

New Jersey partnership question.

Partnerships need to use market sourcing for purposes of calculating NR withholding tax (though NJ doesn't even call this withholding anymore).

However, for purposes of calculating the NJ distributive share of income, you apply Gross Income Tax (personal income tax) rules, which is 3 factor and includes COP.

If I end up with 0% apportionment under GIT and 10% apportionment under CBT (withholding tax), the partnership pays tax upfront but NRs get 100% refund?

Additional Posts in Law Exit Opportunities

Giving my notice this week. It’s going to seem very out of the blue as I am a first year associate. I’m leaving to go into a different career path completely. The people are great but I’m just looking for something different. Any advice?

I have been overworked and overwhelmed at my current job for quite a while. This is my first position out of law school, small firm with large caseload, and in my second year of practice. I often think I should look for another opportunity elsewhere but I don't know that any other firms would give me the potential for growth and experience that I am getting here. What are other 2nd year associates doing at other firms? Trying to gauge if I really am getting more opportunities here

I am looking to enter big law. I had a clerkship on a state Business Calendar and am a current first year litigation associate where I have prepared for a trial, taken and defended depositions, and have extensive motion writing practice in tech, business, and employment cases. I’ve been practicing in both big law (many yrs ago) and now in-house for over 10 years. Quite often I struggle because I don’t find work fulfilling. I’ve been in industries that allegedly have greater cause (healthcare) but was eventually disappointed by the corporate bureaucracy and went to a cutting-edge tech company for intellectual stimulation. Still I struggle. Should I try public interest? Not that I don’t need the money but it’s hard to work when I am so detached and find it meaningless
