I'd prefer delta
American is good out of DC
Delta
Depends on where you're living and where you're going honestly. If you're flying out of DCA its gonna be American or delta. Going out of IAD and your best bet is United. In terms of gaining status, they're all fairly similar; however, American has a fairly easy status challenge and delta seems to run fast track promotions from time to time.
Make American great again!
America

If you live IN DC, delta so you can fly out of DCA - bear in mind you'll probably be connecting most off the time. If you're living outside of DC, i.e. bummy Arlington - United would probably be more efficient out of IAD.
B1 - Delta has better service and on time arrivals. United & American have more flights, which means more destinations, but shitty service and more delayed/cancelled flights.

Why do people love delta so much?
Delta - And they have an amazing challenge going on - 1 round trip for silver + 5k bonus miles, 3 more for gold + 10k bonus miles, 6 more for platinum + 10k bonus miles.
If you're Maryland side of DC, BWI is a Southwest hub
Pick your poison. Sky Pesos though, ouch.
