Just purchased our first home! We are so excited but somewhat clueless. What are some recommended SERVICES we should have done before moving in?

For reference, we are going to schedule: an inspection, tree trimming for branches hanging over the roof, and professional painting.

What are other services (cleaning, pest control, etc) that you recommend? We don’t have much time to take off work, otherwise we would spend more time doing it ourselves.

Congratulations! In this market that isn’t easy! You must be thrilled. I just did inspection and cleaning company.

Congrats ... I am closing in April .. first home, albeit a bit late in life. Following this thread to see what others suggest.

Congratulations! Did you do an inspection as part of your offer process? That helped us figure out and rank the project type stuff we wanted to do, I'm not sure where you live but availability from electricians, handywork type contractors, kitchen designers etc drove a lot of our timelines. Pre-move/right after we moved in we did a deep clean, power washed the deck, picked paint colors and had pest control come (I have a wildly irrational fear of mice so might not be necessary for most). We live in the north east so a bunch of other things were also weather driven but we knew we had to have the driveway resurfaced so lined that up and needed tree people to come spray for these weird itchy caterpillars that are a problem here. I'd start a running list as most things for us came up after we moved in and lived in the space and found some things awkward or just missing.

Congratulations!

Any fixtures or appliances that deal with water should be replaced or checked.

Older hot water heaters may have gross sealants that degrade into your tank, or the tank may not have been regularly cleaned.

Old toilets should be changed or at the very least unseated in order to check the subfloor for slow leaks over the years that may have caused rot.

Have your furnace serviced if it is due. Change or clean air filters.

Remediate any excess humidity or mold before you move in to protect your possessions. This could include ensuring there is adequate airflow in your attic and that bathroom vents are properly venting outside and not into your attic.

like

Steam clean/shampoo carpet, professional cleaning of kitchen and bathroom (you’d be surprised how much stuff goes behind stove and fridge) , as well changing toilet seats.

This is more of a local type question.

Most of the stuff you should get checked as part of your inspection as part of your mortgage contingency, but you might want to get specialist to come in to make sure you’re getting something accurate

HVAC system
Septic, if you have it
Well/water system
Electrician to check out your boxes
Pest control

Think about the large expenses and you just want to do your due diligence to make sure they’re good to go

Water alarms, can alert your phone if they detect water in your basement, near water heater etc

If you are going to do anything to your floors, do it before you move in.
