Hi All, My sister has done Computer Science engineering Bachelor degree and has 5 years of work experience in India. She is applying for MBA at https://www.kenan-flagler.unc.edu/programs/mba/full-time-mba/ and https://kelley.iu.edu/programs/full-time-mba/academics/majors-minors/marketing.html. Her overall goal is to get into Software Product management. Any suggestions if any of these MBA’s can open path in the desired space or if she is better of doing an MS in Comp engg. to further develop deeper Technology skills. Thanks

Rejected from BCG 1st round. Feeling down.
I live by this formula. You should, too!

I went through the journey, regret and then not regret. I regretted because it was such a bubble to tell you that you have to build your network, you have to get along with your classmates, you have to... As someone with very introvert personality, I feel really overwhelmed and doubt whether I could be successful in my career. However, after graduating for 4 years, I reflected more and realized more on who I am and what I want to do. I feel those self awareness and awakening would not happen this soon if I don't get MBA journey.

No. Was working in a non-traditional role prior to MBA. I'd be lucky to make 25% of what I do now without it.
I think the ROI is different for everyone, you need to assess what is right for you.

My BIL does. He got an MBA from SMU and was unemployed for 2 years after. He was in a pretty non descript analyst job at 45 y/o and thought an MBA would break him into management.
Left him over qualified for entry level jobs and under qualified for non entry level. Was stuck paying back 100k for an MBA and now is a realtor
IMO it’s only worth it from a top 20 school, maybe even only top 10
Yikes. I’m so sorry…

Yes.

Why? Can you share more?
Prob not worth an MBA if your aren’t going to a top 15 school. Once you start hitting schools below that threshold it may not be worth it if you’re paying for all of it
Depending on how much you paid.

LOL no ...why would anyone?

Oh, I see...well, my then-employer paid for mine, so I definitely got my money worth :)
I don’t since it was my early career pivot, but I would have if I got a business related undergrad degree. Went to grad school after undergrad to pursue an academic admin career, mostly paid for by a graduate assistantship that was not tied to a program.
I switched early to the MBA program at the no name state school. I learned a lot and my understanding of how businesses work became clearer. I faced concepts I never thought of and got a sweet internship as a result.
BUT I would have regretted selecting the program if I had any professional work experience or taken advanced undergrad business classes. This program was lacking opportunities to network (which I don’t really do much of as a personal choice) and more than a few mandatory classes were subpar for an MBA program.
TLDR:
I used it for an early career pivot.
If you have any professional experience look for a top program.
Try to get it paid for with a graduate assistantship if you plan on going to school full time.

No. I might still be making half of what I currently make, stuck in an awful industry if I hadn't gotten my MBA.
Pro
Not at all. Best time ever and have way better access to jobs now than SAP implementation could ever give.
It’s highly dependent on program rank tho. Each tier has a different level of ROI. Outside of T25 I’d strongly consider why you’re going. If you’re T15 or higher it’s hard to find reasons it won’t be helpful unless you have a high salary AND a pathway to extremely high comp (thinking banking and MBB consulting) even then those professions largely benefit from a nice career break or a network
I don’t regret it, but I also think it’s a little overrated. If you can get where you want to go without it, you should in my opinion. I have friends who ended up in post-MBA roles at places like Starbucks and Amazon without an MBA, and they never had to forgo income for 2 years to get there. I was sponsored and got scholarships at an M7 and am still envious of them sometimes.
That being said, it’s an effective way to pivot your career, build your network, and improve your brand (especially if you go to a T20 school and don’t have anything quite that high tier on your resume)
No, I got a JD - but I do regret that one a lot.
Got a M.Acc with a focus on data analytics, but basically an MBA to switch from Accounting to IT Consulting.
Best move ever. Learned great things, it gave me credibility in the market place. Created a very good foundation. Not a tier 1 MBA just a solid program at a reputable local university.
Someone else paid so nope
Yes, I feel like ppl look at me like I’m stupid bc it’s somehow got a reputation as an easier postgrad cert
Well ya that’s how we in tech look at them

Yes. There is a BIG difference in caliber between Harvard University and Harvard Community the online for-profit non-affiliated MBA program
Surprisingly both cost nearly the same
MBA is a negative roi unless hsw
Pro
How can you say it’s a negative ROI, if someone goes to Anderson or Fuqua and is making 80k pre MBA and then goes into consulting with immediate 200k+ TC and a pathway to 1M+ that they wouldn’t have had before…
