Lately we’ve been so swamped and understaffed that I’ve been doing overtime - like 20h extra per week. Unfortunately for me, I’m salaried so I don’t get paid for the extra hours. Sometimes I wish I were hourly, but I appreciate the stability of being salaried. What’s your limit on how much overtime you’re willing to do before you quit?

I used to do so much overtime even as a salaried employ until my husband made a great point. He said, every minute you work over 40 hours is basically a pay cut. You're making less per hour when it's spread out over 45, 50, or 55 hours. This really shifted my perspective and made me start setting better boundaries. Yes I still work overtime, but it's not a regular thing and I pushed for more strategic staffing to prevent OT.

How do you manage cutting your hours if they need you though? I guess trying to staff better.. but it’s been so tricky lately!

Wow those are some crazy hours. I did the same for a while. Came in at 7am and didn't leave until 5 or 6pm, and even worked 6 days if necessary and salary sucked in that instance. When to my boss and honestly told him that I do not mind working the extra hours but at the end of the day for more than 1 week it is getting close to regular and that needs adjustment in your salary.

Time to look for a new job or take that money & get one one of these training courses for a much better job, you have things like tech, coding etc that takes 2-6 depending on the type of course & how often you do your training. It's worth it, more work life balance & no OT, it's definitely working smarter not harder.

What kind of skills are you working on and what kind of jobs do you think you can get after those courses? I’m looking for ways to get out of the restaurant biz but it’s a rough job market right now… maybe I’ll try a side gig…

I work as an AGM in a busy restaurant. Been working there for just over a year, and haven't had a single raise. I now only make 0.50 cents more than even the lowest paid shift lead but I am doing a lot more work. I'm no longer satisfied with these conditions. Should I try to negotiate a raise or look for other opportunities?

If I should negotiate, any tips?

So I work as an assistant manager at a restaurant for the past 9 months. I've worked in restaurants for the past 6 years science I was 16. Now I'm 22. I went to a trade school for media and film. I got a dream opportunity to work in the field making about the same or 10% more. I told myself the only reason I'd leave this company is for this type of job. Should I take the chance at this job and leave the restaurant that is on the rise and growing?
