Anyone faced the same decision? I might make it in the next 6 months, but given economy may be 18. 99% certain I’ll get the promo- but does this jump make sense. Similar base to an MD and slightly better equity program - but always thought my options later in my career would be magnified if I made MD prior to leaving - Does making a jump at VP mitigate that. Know the client well and it’s in an area I would like long term (Corp transformation).

There's also a limiting factor at the MD level--oftentimes you'll price yourself out of the market, especially if you don't have the deep industry experience industry firms are typically looking for at that comp level.
I know of several PMDs who took 3+ years to arrange an exit due to their options being so limited; they ran into situations where the breadth of their experience was great, but the depth was lacking for industry roles in the same pay band.
I think you’ll end up in a better place and have more work life balance on the whole doing what you did. There are partners/MDs that are destined for ultimate greatness at many firms but you have to exit how you feel works for you. I personally was in a very similar place and went to a company that has 700 employees which is small for me and I’ve loved the exposure, learning and challenges associated with making real decisions that matter. You can always either get promoted or jump to another larger company laterally if you’re bored. I also think you can boomerang back to consulting after a few years and you’ll be more valued for your industry expertise. Comp wise, I always have struggled with what’s the best ultimate option but pretty comfortable with how it’s been so far for me personally.
My 2 cents leaving at MD makes options also limited of where you would exit to, I left while I was a SM only came in as a D in industry; I have noticed industry 80% of the time promotes within; Salary yes would make a world of difference
How’s life in industry ?
FWIW I’ve heard MD complain about limited exit opportunities due to salary band (basically have to be at VP+ level in many industries to get the desired salary)
