It's about to get a lot better now that we have a real leader coming back. Look at the markets. Things are gonna get a lot better, even if you hate him
Do you mean your art director cd partner, or an AD on your team? If it’s someone on your team, they’re not going to accept “you should be happy to have a job,” and honestly, they shouldn’t. Even if the market is shit, it’s still part of your job to be their advocate. And good creatives will always be in high demand, regardless of market conditions.

I’m in the same boat. It never hurts to ask, and reminding senior leadership of your teams accomplishments and advocating for them will benefit you too. But, we all gotta read the room and I’ve been more deliberate about who on my team I advocate for and what I’m asking for from management. I still ask for $$ the top performers, and have contingency plans to help them grow even if you find out the money isn’t there. Are there accounts they want to work on that they haven’t yet? Opportunities to mentor or be mentored? Can you otherwise increase their visibility? Good luck! It’s a brutal time to be a manger.

Yes, I ran it by my boss earlier to get a better read and he was open to meeting and discussing the promotions, raises, etc. I’m glad it wasn’t just shut down and I’m really hoping that I can advocate for something for those top performers — be it title change or salary increase. I agree, if neither are possible I want them to feel invested in and seen, as opposed to simply ignored. It’s a very tough market and it is absolutely a brutal time. Hang in there! ✨
We always do the best we can with what we’ve got. This is the reality of leadership. There are also other ways to reward someone, beyond just money. You can give them a better assignment, you can give them a side project they’ll enjoy. If they have truly earned a promotion, you typically have to have that position open in the agency or a client willing to pay for it. Most people in a creative department don’t understand how the business is run, and they just want to get a promotion and make more money as a reward for doing well. The truth as a promotion means you’re leaving your job to do something else, and when it’s done right, you get money to go to that new job, and you learn new things in that new job, and you have new responsibilities in that new job. But that means that job has to exist on a client within the agency.
