I love the self driving taxis - clean, safe, about as much as an Uber X but without the awkward small talk.
Self-driving cars honking at each other is objectively hilarious (assuming you don’t live in one of the surrounding buildings). Seems like a pretty quick fix in the software?
I love them, I'll generally take one instead of an Uber or Lyft even if they're a bit slower or more expensive.
- Most of the rideshare drivers I get are just plain bad at driving. Dangerous maneuvers on the road. Heavy accelerator followed by heavy break over and over, with zero finesse. Insist they know better than the app telling them about a traffic jam and then get stuck in said jam. Waymo's safe and buttery smooth. I took my (boomer) parents in one when they visited and by the end of the ride my mom was giving my dad a hard time that he couldn't drive anywhere near as well.
- Occasionally the driver has some horrible air freshener that makes me want to puke. Pairs well with jerky acceleration. Just what I wanted on my way home with a migraine. Never a problem in a Waymo.
- Occasionally the driver insists on making smalltalk, or talking at me about whatever happens to be on their mind, or being on a phone call for the entire ride. Never a problem in a Waymo.
- When you book an Uber/Lyft, the estimate you see before you hit buy is a guess at what their "independent" drivers will do when they see your request. Occasionally the driver will just not show up, or will play stupid games trying to get me to cancel so it doesn't hurt their metrics. Or they'll cancel the ride once they see the destination. Or they'll sit around not accepting the ride hoping for a better price. Waymo doesn't have any of that bullshit, if it says they'll be there in 5 minutes, they're there in 5 minutes (barring sudden changes in traffic -- even then, they'll eventually show up, unlike most rideshare drivers who will just cancel).
💯
Do you live there? I would just start throwing bricks down if they woke me up at 4am. But Waymo says they pushed new software out to stop the honking
Isn’t it illegal to cause a disturbance at night? I’m pretty sure you can use reasonable force to stop the disturbance since its illegal.
Maybe go down with a hammer and smash the grille in hopes you’ll disable the horn. It’s not illegal because you’re trying to stop a crime
Also, that honking is most likely an infraction at best (violation of the SF noise ordinance), the same category as jaywalking. Disturbing the peace (a misdemeanor) requires that the disturbance be willful, and this was pretty obviously not done intentionally to disturb the people nearby. You can't even citizen's arrest over an infraction let alone use force.
