No thats not normal, set your boundries
If its urgent and or they want to talk rather than IM they’ll call
I don't think there is anything wrong with calling w/o heads up - I do that myself as sometimes just easier than writing a message. However, if the person doesn't pick up, I leave a quick note and wait until they call me back - that easy.

It's a generational thing. Mainly people 50+ sometimes 45+ do it. No one under that age answers a call they weren't expecting or don't recognize the number, so they never call people without scheduling or texting first. I work with some Boomers who literally answer calls from Scam Likely because "what if it's actually important?"
Us oldies remember the good old days when you’d just start talking to the person sitting next to you. We’re trying to recreate that with technology. Do you really need to make an appointment every time you chat with your colleagues?
it happens, but it only becomes the norm if you let it. If I miss a call I’ll just ping back asking what’s up
